Senior Project Manager
About the role
Senior Project Manager
The role
Join a central government organisation at the early stages of building a new digital platform to simplify and improve their current ways of working. Your role will be to provide structure, direction, and momentum across delivery squads working within a dynamic, high-profile programme. You’ll ensure teams have the clarity, resources, and support they need to deliver on agreed priorities, while maintaining strong alignment with business stakeholders and programme sponsors. The environment is collaborative and fast-evolving. You’ll be balancing pace with process, making sure delivery stays on track and outcomes are clearly communicated. This is a great role for someone who can confidently step into an established delivery environment and bring focus, rhythm, and confidence to complex work.
What you’ll do
- Lead planning and delivery activities across multiple squads using hybrid-Agile methods.
- Partner with business leads and technical specialists to define scope, timelines, and priorities.
- Facilitate effective delivery cycles – including stand-ups, retrospectives, and regular progress reporting.
- Maintain visibility of risks, dependencies, and issues, ensuring these are managed proactively.
- Support communication across senior stakeholders and governance forums.
- Embed inclusive, people-centred approaches that reflect modern public service values.
- 5+ years’ experience leading delivery in large or complex digital programmes.
- Strong background in Agile or hybrid-Agile delivery environments.
- Confidence engaging senior stakeholders and influencing outcomes across business and technical domains.
- Proven experience managing programme reporting, governance, and risk frameworks.
- Relevant project or delivery management certification (e.g. Prince2, PMI, Agile).
- A steady, pragmatic delivery mindset – able to bring clarity and calm to complex change.
- A newly established digital initiative that’s setting the foundation for long-term transformation.
- Work with engaged, forward-thinking teams who are passionate about building better systems and services.
- Enjoy a balanced hybrid environment with autonomy and flexibility.
- Wellington-based, 12-month fixed term (with strong likelihood of extension to 24 months).
