Head of Technology
About the role
About Spanbild
Spanbild is a proudly New Zealand-owned market leader in the design, manufacture, and delivery of residential, rural, and commercial buildings. Behind some of New Zealand's most recognised building brands — Versatile, Totalspan, Ideal, and Portabuild — Spanbild operates large-scale manufacturing facilities in Christchurch and Matamata, supported by in-house design, engineering, and R&D teams. With a nationwide network of over 70 franchisees and distributors, technology sits at the heart of how Spanbild operates, connects, and grows.
About the Role
This is a newly created leadership role, born out of an exciting period of change for the business. Spanbild is ready to take its technology function to the next level — and they need the right person to lead it.
Reporting to the CEO, you'll take ownership of Spanbild's technology ecosystem, bringing together an established development team and infrastructure team under clear, practical leadership. You will be expected to come in, get under the hood of the business for the initial stages, then help build the roadmap for the future of technology in the business.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll be close enough to the technical detail to earn the trust of your team, while operating at a level that connects technology to manufacturing, finance, and the wider franchise network.
What You'll Do
- Lead and mentor a team of developers and infrastructure specialists
- Build and own Spanbild's technology roadmap in partnership with the CEO
- Act as the bridge between technology and the wider business, manufacturing, finance, and franchise operations
- Drive integration across bespoke and third-party systems (including HubSpot, Jira, and custom-built platforms)
- Provide practical leadership on AI adoption and governance
- Manage and evolve infrastructure with an eye toward the future
- Ensure technology supports not just head office, but Spanbild's national franchisee network
You're a senior technologist who has been in the trenches, not too long ago, and still knows how to operate close to the detail. You want to lead a team, shape a strategy, and deliver real outcomes in a business that actually makes things. While you will have a seat at the leadership table, you won’t be removed from the action.
You'll bring:
- A strong technical background with hands-on experience, ideally across development and/or infrastructure
- Proven experience leading and mentoring small-to-mid-sized technology teams
- Experience driving digital transformation, including legacy modernisation and system integration
- The ability to translate technology into language that resonates with non-technical stakeholders
- A commercial, pragmatic mindset, outcome-focused, not hype-driven
- Experience in manufacturing, construction, franchising, or similarly operational environments would be an advantage
This is a rare opportunity to shape a technology function from the ground up in a business that has real scale, a strong brand, and genuine ambition. You'll work closely with a CEO who understands technology and has a vision for where the business needs to go — your job is to help get it there.
