The opportunity:

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Application Support Engineer to join a complex enterprise technology environment on a 6-month contract.
This is a hands-on technical role sitting across application support, production support, service delivery and continuous improvement. You’ll take technical service requests from initial investigation through implementation, testing, production validation and closure, while ensuring appropriate change, release and governance controls are followed.
You’ll troubleshoot issues across applications, data and configuration, working closely with Product, Engineering, Reliability, Customer Support and Technology Solutions teams to identify root causes and get issues to the right owners.
Importantly, this isn’t just about keeping the lights on. You’ll also look for opportunities to standardise, automate and improve repeatable support activities, reducing manual effort and recurring issues through better processes, scripts, APIs, workflows and reusable tooling.
You’ll leave the environment stronger than you found it, with clear runbooks, technical documentation, reusable assets and effective knowledge transfer to the teams who will own the work longer term.

What you’ll bring:

• 5+ years’ experience in Application Support, Production Support, Technical Services, Service Engineering or a similar enterprise technology environment
• Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills across applications, data, configuration and production environments
• Good SQL capability and experience investigating data-related application issues
• Experience working with Microsoft technologies and cloud or SaaS environments
• Practical Git/source control experience including branching, commits, pull requests, peer review, merge resolution and release tagging
• Experience working with structured data formats such as XML, XSL, JSON or equivalent
• Understanding of change and release management, including implementation planning, testing, production validation and rollback
• Ability to identify whether an issue relates to an application/product defect, data, configuration or process, and work with the appropriate technical team to resolve it
• Experience improving operational processes through automation, scripting, APIs or workflow tooling
• Strong technical documentation skills, including runbooks, procedures, known-error guidance and handover documentation
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently across multiple technical teams

The underlying role also requires risk-based testing, service management, CI/CD fundamentals, process improvement and production governance, so I would retain these concepts in the advert rather than positioning it as purely reactive application support.

Nice to have:
Experience with financial services, payments or regulated transactional environments would be particularly valuable.
Exposure to ITIL, Kanban, CI/CD, deployment automation, APIs, workflow tooling, service catalogue design or AI-assisted engineering would also be advantageous.
